Lighting is not one job. It is many small jobs. You can start with one.
1. Lighting Designer (LD) โ ืืขืฆื ืชืืืจื
The artist. He thinks: "What will the stage look like?" He picks the lights, the colors, and the time of each change. He draws the plan.
2. Programmer โ ืืชืื ืช
He types the designer's ideas into the console (the lighting computer). He builds the cues (ืงืื). People call him "the fingers of the designer."
3. Lighting Operator / Board Op โ ืืคืขืื ืชืืืจื โญ This is your first goal.
He runs the show. In theatre, he presses the GO button when the stage manager says "GO". In concerts, he plays the lights live, like music. Before the show, he checks every light.
4. Electrician โ ืืฉืืืื ืืื
He hangs the lights, connects power and cables, and fixes broken lights. Safety is his big job.
He aims one big light at a singer or actor, by hand, and follows him. This is a classic first job for a beginner.
A Day at Work โ 4 Kinds of Shows
Theatre (ืชืืืืจืื): Check all lights. Then sit with headphones. The stage manager says "LX 23โฆ GO" โ you press GO. Same show, same way, every night.
Concert / Tour (ืืืคืขื): Morning: build the stage. Afternoon: fix the show file for this city. Night: play the lights live with the music. Late night: pack everything.
Company Event (ืืืจืืข ืืืจื): Clean, simple looks. A person speaks โ light on the person. Logo on the wall. Be tidy and on time.
Big Resident Show, like Las Vegas (ืืืคืข ืงืืืข): The same big show many times a week, for years. Check hundreds of lights every day. Do every cue exactly the same.
Important: You can be a good operator and NOT a designer. Most designers started as operators or electricians.
Week 1 Basics โ Learn This First
The 5 Things You Can Change โ ืืืืฉื ืืืจืื ืฉืืคืฉืจ ืืฉื ืืช ืืืืจ
Intensity (ืขืืฆืื) โ How strong? Bright or dark?
Color (ืฆืืข) โ Warm (ืื) like fire, or cool (ืงืจ) like ice. Color changes the feeling fast.
Angle / Direction (ืืืืืช) โ From the front? From the side? From behind? From the top? Angle makes shape and shadow.
Texture (ืืจืงื) โ A soft wide light, or a hard light with a pattern? A pattern is called a gobo (ืืืื).
Movement / Change (ืชื ืืขื / ืฉืื ืื) โ Lights move, or change slowly or fast. A slow change feels calm. A fast change feels like a shock.
A designer uses light for 4 jobs: see the people, show the place, make a good picture, and make a feeling (mood, ืืฆื ืจืื).
Kinds of Lights (Fixtures) โ ืกืืื ืคื ืกืื
Profile / Ellipsoidal (ืคืจืืคืื) โ Sharp light. Can make lines and put a gobo pattern. Example: Source Four.
Fresnel (ืคืจื ื) โ Soft light. Good for a wash (ืฉืืืคื) of light.
PAR (ืคืืจ) โ Strong, punchy wash. Simple and cheap.
LED light (ืื) โ Makes colors inside the light. No color plastic (gel) needed. It needs normal power, NOT a dimmer.
Moving light (ืคื ืก ื ืข / ืืืืื ื) โ Moves by itself: pan (left-right) and tilt (up-down), color, gobo, zoom. Three kinds: Profile/Spot (patterns), Wash (soft color), Beam (a thin, strong line of light โ famous in concerts).
Followspot (ืคื ืก ืขืืงื) โ A big light a person aims by hand.
Haze (ืขืจืคื ืงื / ืืืื) โ Very thin fog. It makes light beams visible in the air. In concerts, you light the haze!
DMX โ In Simple Words โ ืื ืื DMX?
DMX is the language the console uses to talk to the lights. It is only numbers.
One DMX cable line is called a Universe (ืืื ืืืจืก). One universe has 512 channels (ืขืจืืฆืื).
Each channel is a number from 0 to 255. 0 = off. 255 = full.
A simple dimmer light uses 1 channel.
A moving light uses a block of channels โ often 12 to 30. One channel for movement, one for color, one for light on/off, and so on. The book for the light (manual) has the list. This list is called the mode (ืืฆื).
Address (ืืชืืืช) โ You tell each light: "Start listening at channel number ___." Example: 101. Blocks must NOT sit on top of each other.
Patch (ืคืืฅ') โ You tell the console the same thing: which light, which universe, which address. If patch and light agree โ it works!
Lights connect in a line, one to the next: console โ light โ light โ light. This is a daisy chain. Put a small plug called a terminator (ืืจืืื ืืืจ) in the last light.
Easy math to remember: 10 moving lights ร 20 channels = 200 channels. 200 is less than 512 โ so all 10 fit in ONE universe. ๐
โ ๏ธ Power and Safety โ Very Important
LED lights and moving lights need normal, full power + a DMX cable. Never plug a moving light into a dimmer (ืืขืืขื)!
Power math: Watts รท Volts = Amps. Add the amps before you plug in. Too many amps = the breaker (ืืคืกืง) stops, or worse.
Every light that hangs up high gets a safety cable (ืืื ืืืืืืช). Always. No cable = do not hang it.
Never touch a lamp with your bare hand. The oil on your skin can make the lamp break or explode. Use gloves or a cloth.
Big power cables (feeder) are for trained electricians only. Ground (ืืืจืงื) goes on first, and off last.
Dangers: falling, electric shock (even a small tingle โ tell someone!), hot lamps (burns), and things falling from above.
A beginner never hangs lights alone, never connects big power, and never works up high alone. Knowing what NOT to touch is a strong skill. ๐ช
๐ญ Light Lab โ Play With Light
This is a small fake stage. Try things. Nothing can break here.
The McCandless idea (your first design system): two front lights at 45ยฐ โ one warm, one cool โ plus one light from behind. Try it below.
Money rule: Pay $0 until you finish Step 2. Free is enough.
Step 1 โ Tasks
โ Prove It โ You Can Do This:
Step 2 โ Tasks (Pick ONE Console Only!)
Theatre โ ETC Eos. Concerts โ grandMA3. Hard choice? Start with Eos or MagicQ for 2โ3 weeks to learn the ideas, then move. One console, well, is the goal.
โ Prove It โ You Can Do This:
Step 3 โ Tasks
โ Prove It โ You Can Do This:
Step 4 โ Tasks (Real World!)
โ Prove It โ You Can Do This:
Now you can say true words: "I know lighting operation." After this, every hour is more speed and more taste. ๐
๐๏ธ The Consoles โ The Lighting Computers
Different shows use different consoles. The ideas are the same in all of them: patch, groups, presets, cues, effects. Learn ONE well.

Hard to learn?
Free training
Cost to learn
grandMA3 (MA Lighting)
Concerts, festivals, TV, big events โ all over the world
Hardest of the five โ but the best for concert jobs
Hog 4 PC program is free to learn on. ETC runs 1-day Hog classes. Smaller YouTube world than MA/Eos.
$0 to learn offline. Real DMX out needs Hog hardware or a key.
Avolites Titan
Concerts in the UK/Europe, lots of live busking
Medium. Visual, fader-based way of work
Avolites Academy โ Foundation course first, then Titan Level 1 (70+ videos).
โ ๏ธ NOT a $0 home tool: Titan on your own PC needs a paid Editor key (AvoKey).
โ ๏ธ Do NOT start with grandMA2 in 2026. It is the old system (legacy). Learn grandMA3. Only learn MA2 if a specific job uses it. Same for old books and old videos โ check the date!
๐ฅ๏ธ Free Simulators โ Practice With NO Console
The big secret: three consoles are FREE downloads, and each one has a free 3D stage (visualizer, ืืืืืืืืืืจ) inside it. A full fake stage on your laptop โ $0.
What is locked? Sending DMX out to REAL lights. You do not need that to learn. The 3D stage is enough.
โ The 5 Free Combos That Work
grandMA3 onPC โ alone. Built-in 3D Viewer in the same program. Best if concerts are your goal. Download via MA Lighting.
ETC Eos โ alone. Built-in 3D called Augment3d, plus the free Light Lab play file. Best for theatre. The friendliest start. ETC for Educators.
ChamSys MagicQ โ alone. Built-in visualizer called MagicVis. Bonus: MagicQ can also send up to 64 universes over a network (Art-Net/sACN) for free.
MagicQ โ Capture Student Edition. Capture Student is FREE for everyone (not only students). A nicer 3D stage, about 50 lights in the free library. MagicQ sends Art-Net out, Capture takes it in. Still $0. Also works: QLC+ โ Capture Student, ONYX (universe 1) โ Capture Student.
grandMA2 onPC โ MA 3D. The old way. Only if a job needs MA2.
More Free Tools
QLC+ โ free, open program. Not a pro console, but the easiest Day-1 DMX teacher: patch โ scene โ cue list in one evening.
Obsidian ONYX โ free program. Universe 1 is free by network. (Old pages say "4 free" โ that is old news.)
โ ๏ธ Traps โ Read This
Hog 4 PC is free to open and edit shows, but it has NO built-in 3D stage, and DMX out is locked. Weakest free home tool.
grandMA3 + outside visualizer (Capture, Depenceโฆ) needs a paid viz-key. You do NOT need it โ use MA3's built-in 3D. Do not buy it to learn.
Paid visualizers (only much later): Capture Solo โฌ395 one-time; L8 CE3 โฌ500; Depence Stage โฌ1,900. WYSIWYG is free only for students/teachers in a real school program.
Best first paid step (students only): ETCnomad Education Package, $350 โ a key for real DMX out (1,000 outputs + a 2-universe box). It never ends, and the same key also runs Hog 4 PC.
There is no good pro DMX simulator in a web browser. Learning happens on the laptop programs above.

๐จ The Art Side โ Make It Beautiful
Learn Stage Lighting โ David Henry (YouTube). The best channel for a total beginner. He teaches choices, not only buttons. Start with his beginner and "5 Minutes to Better Lighting" videos, and Color 101: one strong color for a song is often best; warm + cool together look great.
The McCandless Method โ your first design system: Drama by Design โ Stage Lighting Basics. Stage in small areas; each area: 2 front lights at 45ยฐ, one warm + one cool, + 1 back light. Side light = shape. Dance loves side light.
ETC Augment3d Light Lab (free, inside Eos) โ play with light like on a real stage. No knowledge needed to start.
Practice: one face โ front only (flat) โ add side (shape) โ add back (separation) โ add top (drama). Same scene in warm, cool, strong color. Fade 0 sec (shock), 3 sec (normal), 10 sec (dream). Time is a feeling.
Networks โ Art-Net and sACN:Advatek โ Art-Net and sACN Explained. Both send many universes over one network cable. Beginner rule: one console + one node + Art-Net first.
Fix-it list (a light does not work?): 1) Power? 2) Data โ cable ok? terminator? chain order? 3) Address and mode on the light = same as patch? 4) Console โ is it parked? Grand Master up? Blackout off? Most problems are address, patch, or cable.
Repairs: as a beginner, stay at "see and swap": change a lamp with gloves, test cables, swap a light, clean fans. Inside-the-light repairs and big power = trained electricians only.
LIGHT TALK (with The Lumen Brothers) โ Designers and teachers talk about design, scripts, and cues. 490+ episodes, since 2019. Best for the art side. Find it in any podcast app.
The Lighting Nerds โ Tech, gear, and news. "Lighting Term of the Day" in many episodes. The most operator/tech one. (New episodes are rare now โ last one found: January 2025.) Listen
LD at Large โ Chris Lose โ Talks with touring designers and programmers about real show files and real life on tour. PLSN โ listen
in 1: the podcast โ Cory Pattak โ Long talks with theatre designers about how they work and live. in1podcast.com
The Learn Stage Lighting Podcast โ David Henry โ Simple, practical, for small stages and churches. Good first listen.
โ ๏ธ Honest note: a podcast called "Cue to Cue" exists, but it is for actors/performers โ it is NOT a lighting podcast. Q2Q ("cue to cue") is also the name of a theatre rehearsal. Do not mix them.
๐ Books โ Read in This Order
A Practical Guide to Stage Lighting โ Steven Louis Shelley. THE first book. It starts like you know nothing: the theatre, electricity, the lights, the people โ then the full design process to opening night.
Stage Lighting Design: The Art, The Craft, The Life โ Richard Pilbrow. The big art book. Read it SECOND โ it is deep, not a quick 101.
The Stage Lighting Handbook โ Francis Reid, or Stage Lighting: The Fundamentals โ Richard E. Dunham. Short, clear basics books. The root of it all: Stanley McCandless, A Method of Lighting the Stage (1932).
People Who Help for Free (Communities)
ControlBooth.com โ the old, kind tech-theatre forum. Its "Complete List of Industry Training Resources" page is gold.
MA Forum (official), ETC forums + "ETC Eos Family Console Programmers" Facebook group, ChamSys Programmers and Users Facebook group.
Discord: grandMA3 community, The Lighting Nerds. Reddit: r/lightingdesign, r/techtheatre โ good people, but it is opinion, not law.
In real life: LDI (Las Vegas) and USITT shows โ every console company gives free hands-on demos there.
